5 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE JOINING A TEAM

There are lots of things to think about when deciding how to spend your summer, and there are lots of options available. Here are five questions you should ask of any trip, and some reasons why HistoryMakers might be a good fit…

  1. Will I meet a need?

One of the biggest accusations against short-term mission trips is that they can do more harm than good. Sometimes they are an expensive way of meeting a need that doesn’t exist, or nothing more than a glorified holiday.

HistoryMakers works alongside longstanding partners to ensure your time is well used. Not only will you have a chance to use your gifts to support the witness of the local church, but you’ll also be a huge encouragement to those workers and believers. In some cases, you’ll even be able to do work that they’re restricted from doing themselves!

  1. Will I be looked after?

Our handy orientation pack will give you all the information you need before the trip begins, including how to prepare and what to expect when you get there. The trip will be led by somebody experienced in taking teams out on overseas mission, and they will meet with you before the trip to get to know you and answer any questions you might have.

Once on the trip, our local partners will take good care of the whole team, including everything from doing the work to sorting out food and travel.

  1. Can I afford it?

Mission trips come with varying costs, and we aim to charge nothing more than the cost of your trip (i.e. we’re not charging you for the leader’s time or skimming any profits off the top!) HistoryMakers teams tend to cost £1200-£1500, and you’ll probably get some spending money out of that too. If that figure seems a bit high, don’t forget that your church family and others might be very keen to support you with these costs. We’ll be happy to help with fundraising ideas too!

  1. What’s in it for me?

In one sense, nothing. We go on mission trips to serve. Historically, missionaries have risked their lives and lost loved ones as they’ve sought to reach the lost. We wouldn’t expect any of that to happen on a HistoryMakers team, but we do go seeking to give rather than receive and everything we get involved with is ultimately for God’s glory.

But in another sense, there is everything in it for me! Those who join our teams find their eyes opened to understand what mission is all about, to what life is like for believers in other parts of the world, and to how privileged we are as believers in the West. There’ll be plenty of time to reflect on these things and for many, it’s a life-changing experience.

  1. Will I be able to Instagram my whole trip?

Probably not. Not only is Wi-Fi patchy in some locations, but some of the countries we visit are particularly sensitive, meaning a good workout for those self-restraint muscles! That said, you’ll be able to take plenty of photos to show family, friends and supporters when you get home.

Applications are now open for our Summer 2020 teams, find out more and join us!
